Building your API Stack
The rise of RESTful APIs has been met by a rise in tools for creating, testing, and managing them.

In today's connected world, APIs are the glue that holds software together. Whether you're building a microservices architecture or just exposing functionality to third parties, having a solid API stack is crucial.
Start with the design. Before writing any code, define your API contract. Tools like OpenAPI (Swagger) allow you to specify your endpoints, request/response formats, and authentication requirements. This contract serves as documentation and enables parallel development.
Choose the right framework. For REST APIs, Express.js and Fastify are popular in the Node.js ecosystem. If you're building something more real-time, consider GraphQL with Apollo or even gRPC for high-performance internal services.
Don't forget testing. APIs need rigorous testing. Use tools like Postman or Insomnia for manual testing during development, but also invest in automated integration tests. Contract testing with tools like Pact can ensure your API doesn't break consumers.
Monitoring and documentation are essential. Once deployed, you need visibility into your API's performance. Tools like Datadog or New Relic can track latency and error rates. For documentation, consider automated solutions that generate docs from your OpenAPI spec.
